April Motion Design Meetup

Last night I attended the monthly networking event, Motion Design Meetup, hosted by wellington animation studio Fox&Co at a rotation of local bars or sometimes at their HQ. I was lucky enough to have it be hosted at Fox&Co this month for my first time coming to the meetup.

Inside was a diverse group of 30 odd from all sorts of artistic disciplines. Professionals working for studios full-time, freelancers, university tutors, a few eager students, and a pug; there was a little bit of everything on offer. I was admittedly pretty nervous when I turned up, fearing I wouldn't fit in with bona fide industry professionals, but everybody was pretty laid back and happy to share insights as to what it's like to pay your rent with art. Many were even curious to hear out what I've been upto as a student, what softwares I was learning, what fields I'm hoping to enter, often they'd point me towards local studios worth checking out which was super helpful.

Later into the night we gathered around a tv as people took turns to show-off projects they'd been working on and wanted feedback for. It was quite reassuring seeing these in-progress works because they looked very similar to the calibre of work we've been making at uni. Showing that working in the industry is actually quite achievable for those who really try. The super polished works we're used to seeing are the product of lots of people and lots more time, so it was great to see work made by single people in smaller time frames. Makes my goals seem far more reachable.
