3D Space Studies: The Porcelain Throne Pt1

Updated: Sep 21, 2021

For a final assessment in my Game Technologies class, I've chosen to create a 3d scene from 2d reference. The scene I'm recreating is my bathroom, I've chosen this due to the small but densely populated area with a wide range of materials and forms inside it. Having direct access to the reference environment lets me take ample reference as well as measure lengths.

Recently, my partner bought a new iPad Pro. These models come with LIDAR sensors which greatly improve the ease and quality of photogrammetry work. I grabbed a couple of different scanning apps and tested them out. Polycam was hands down the best of the apps I found. For $13 a month I can scan to my heart's content. Here's the result straight from Polycam.

While the model isn't perfect it gives me awesome lighting reference and a great way to get a sense of scale and position for my scene. Going forward I'm definitely going to be using these photogrammetry tools more. Day 2 After taking a ridiculous number of measurements from my bathroom, I made a basic block out of the bathroom to act as my size reference going forward making the actual assets.
